However, with great freedom comes great responsibility. The President urged editors to strike a balance between freedom of the press and responsible reporting, especially in the age of digital information where misinformation can spread rapidly. He advised, "Verification must be your anchor; balance must be your principle, and professional judgment must be your guide." This is where things get tricky.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, called the President's attendance at the NGE conference historic, emphasizing the government's commitment to press freedom by stating that no media outlet has been shut down under the current administration.
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State added another layer to the discussion, challenging editors to shape credible narratives, particularly in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. He warned against irresponsible reporting, which can fuel distrust and division.
NGE President Eze Anaba also presented a clear vision for the future, calling on the government to support the media through measures like corporate tax exemptions, VAT relief, and access to affordable financing. He also proposed a Media Development Fund to foster digital innovation and newsroom transformation.
