Bugiri: A Campaign Trail with a Difference
Uniting for Progress: Museveni's Message in Busoga
In a powerful display of political outreach, President Museveni, the NRM's presidential candidate, embarked on a campaign journey through the Busoga sub-region, starting in Bugiri District. Accompanied by key party leaders, including Alhaji Moses Kigongo, the First National Vice Chairman of NRM, the President aimed to rekindle trust and garner support for his party's vision.
A Legacy of Unity and Development
Museveni emphasized the NRM's unique approach, contrasting it with the divisive politics of the past. "We believe in the value of every Ugandan, and that belief has kept our nation stable," he asserted. This sentiment resonated with the thousands of supporters, many of whom had experienced the transformative power of the NRM's policies.
Infrastructure: Connecting Busoga to Progress
The President highlighted the region's infrastructural advancements, from the reconstruction of major highways to the introduction of new tarmac roads. He assured residents of further development, with key road projects in the works. But here's where it gets controversial: some argue that these projects are long overdue, while others praise the government's commitment to rural connectivity.
Water Access: A Unique Solution
Addressing the region's water challenges, Museveni proposed a novel solution. Due to the geology of the Lake Victoria basin, boreholes are not feasible. Instead, the government plans to pump water directly from the lake to higher areas, a strategy already implemented successfully in Lira. "We aim to provide a reliable water supply to the people of Bugiri," he explained, a promise that could significantly impact the region's development.
Education: Bridging the Gap
The President expressed concern over the uneven distribution of schools in Bugiri. With a significant number of parishes lacking government primary schools, he called for immediate action. "We must ensure every parish has access to quality education," he urged. To address this gap, the government announced the construction of new secondary schools and seed schools, aiming to provide educational opportunities to all.
Development vs. Wealth: A Nuanced Perspective
Museveni emphasized the distinction between development and wealth, a concept often misunderstood. "Development is about creating opportunities for all, not just the accumulation of wealth," he explained. He highlighted the importance of commercial agriculture, manufacturing, services, and ICT as sectors driving wealth creation, a strategy that has shown success across the country.
Job Creation: A Complex Challenge
The President acknowledged the challenges of job creation, especially with a limited number of government jobs. "Real jobs come from a thriving private sector," he said, citing the success of factories, which now employ over 1.3 million Ugandans. He expressed frustration with the resistance to free education, a policy aimed at creating equal opportunities for all children.
Empowering Communities: A Multi-Pronged Approach
To boost household incomes, the government plans to continue supporting communities through various initiatives, including the Parish Development Model, Emyooga, and targeted youth funds. These programs aim to empower ghetto communities, boda boda riders, unemployed graduates, and religious and cultural institutions, ensuring a more inclusive development process.
NRM's Impact in Bugiri: A Story of Progress
The district has made significant strides in education, healthcare, water access, and environmental conservation. With over 149 primary schools serving more than 105,000 children, and plans to construct additional secondary schools, Bugiri is on a path of educational advancement. The region's health infrastructure is also expanding, with new facilities and upgrades planned. Safe water coverage has increased, and additional water and sanitation projects are in the works.
And this is the part most people miss: the NRM's impact extends beyond statistics. It's about the lives transformed, the communities empowered, and the progress that is tangible and real. As the campaign trail continues, the NRM's vision for a united and prosperous Uganda remains at the forefront.
What are your thoughts on the NRM's approach to development? Do you think their strategies will continue to resonate with voters? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments!
