But here's where it gets controversial: this year, IDFA introduces a new artistic director, Isabel Arrate Fernandez, who takes the helm after Orwa Nyrabia's departure. On Tuesday, IDFA unveiled its International Competition section, featuring an eclectic mix of established and emerging filmmakers. These artists reflect on contemporary issues, with most of their works premiering in Amsterdam for the very first time.

The Luminous section, a premiere-only showcase, features 27 films that range from personal stories to experimental masterpieces. One such film, "Do or Die" by Toia Bonino and Marcos Joubert, offers a rare glimpse into prison life and the power of cinema.
In "House of Hope," Marjolein Busstra captures the struggles of a Palestinian woman running a Waldorf school on the West Bank, providing a safe haven for children amidst violence. "Paikar" by Dawood Hilmandi is a poignant family portrait, exploring themes of exile and reconciliation.
The Frontlight section, also premiere-only, examines urgent issues through a more traditional documentary lens.
