Greg Chappell on Harry Brook: ‘He reminds me very much of Sachin Tendulkar…’ (2025)

Imagine being compared to Sachin Tendulkar – a cricketing god. That's the weight of expectation currently resting on the shoulders of Harry Brook, the young English batting sensation. But can he live up to the hype, especially with the Ashes Down Under looming?

Harry Brook has quickly become a name synonymous with explosive talent in the world of cricket. His ability to construct long, impactful innings has already marked him as a player to watch. However, the upcoming Ashes series in Australia represents arguably the biggest test of his career so far. This is where reputations are truly forged.

Former Australian cricket legend Greg Chappell has added fuel to the fire, drawing a striking parallel between Brook and a young Sachin Tendulkar. In his column for ESPNCricinfo, Chappell, a veteran of the game at 77, explained that Brook's initial movements at the crease strongly reminded him of the Master Blaster himself.

"I’ve watched him bat on television, and he reminds me very much of Sachin Tendulkar in the early part of his career," Chappell wrote. "Very minimal movement early on, picks off the angles very well, and can score off most deliveries."

Chappell didn't stop there, further predicting Brook has the potential to become one of England's finest batsmen, possibly even their most destructive in the modern era. High praise indeed! But here's where it gets controversial... Can anyone truly replicate Sachin's magic? Is this comparison fair, or is it setting Brook up for unrealistic expectations? What do you think?

And this is the part most people miss... While the praise is undoubtedly flattering, Brook himself seems grounded and focused. He's acknowledged the pressure and intensity that comes with international cricket, particularly after a gruelling series against India earlier this year.

Brook admitted he's still processing that intense India series, a five-Test battle for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy that ended in a 2-2 draw. The series, played between June and August, demanded peak performance for 25 consecutive days.

"I don’t know what I’m stepping into [with the Ashes]. I know it’s a massive thing, but I’m still trying to get over that India series. That was awesome to be part of: to play 25 days out of 25 was mega. That was the most intense series I’ve ever been part of. If the Ashes tops that, I will be a very happy man,” Brook said, according to ESPNCricinfo. He's clearly aware of the challenge ahead.

"It is obviously intense. I can’t even remember much about the 2023 Ashes, if I’m honest. It’s a very similar group of players that we’ll come up against: a very strong bowling attack and on home soil they’ll present different challenges. I haven’t had too much experience of the pitches out there, so I have to stay in the moment as much as possible and play what’s in front of me,” he added. This demonstrates a mature and pragmatic approach, focusing on the present rather than getting caught up in the hype.

Ultimately, the Ashes will be a defining moment for Harry Brook. Will he rise to the occasion and justify the comparisons to Sachin Tendulkar? Or will the pressure prove too much? Let us know your predictions in the comments below! Do you agree with Chappell's assessment? And what are Brook's chances of success in Australia?
