The study also highlighted the impact of genetic changes in cancer. For instance, patients with a normal KRAS gene and high lymphocyte levels had better survival rates. This combination of immune data and genetics provides a more comprehensive understanding of cancer behavior.

Dr. Zhuoyan Shen, the first author, explains, "The AI approach identifies these hidden immune signatures, offering biological insights comparable to whole-genome sequencing but at a fraction of the cost and technical complexity."

The researchers developed a free online tool, Octopath, to make their findings accessible to clinicians. However, they emphasize the need for further research to validate their results in larger, more diverse patient groups.

Professor Maria Hawkins, a senior author and consultant clinical oncologist, adds, "This is an exciting step towards AI-assisted cancer classification. While further research is needed, the potential for AI to provide timely, personalized treatment information is promising."
